`Restore rail reservation facility for Ambur'

By Our Staff Reporter

AMBUR, FEB.10. The Town Railway Passengers Association, Ambur and the Ambur Tanners' Association have urged the Railways to restore the facility ofadvance reservation of train tickets from or to the Ambur railway station from anywhere in India.

In a memorandum to Ramesh Chanderji, general manager, Southern Railway, during his official visit to the Ambur railway station on Wednesday, Kankaria Manackraj Jain, general secretary of the Town Railway Passengers' Association, said that since January 1, no reservation tickets were issued either for boarding or alighting at Ambur station in the Brindhavan Express, the Kovai Express, the Chennai-Coimbatore Inter-City Express and the Lal Bagh Express. The computerised reservation centre here gets the message `no rooms' whenever an applicant seeks reservation in a train from or to the Ambur station. Therefore, passengers boarding the train or alighting at the Ambur station are forced to reserve tickets either from Katpadi or Jolarpet or to Katpadi or Jolarpet, paying extra fare. The association therefore requested the general manager to arrange for issue of reservation tickets to any station from Ambur and vice-versa.

Plea for conversion

The association also pleaded for the conversion of the train no.6089/6090 Chennai-Jolarpet Yelagiri Express as a Fast Passenger. It also requested the Railways to arrange for the stopping of all weekly trains, summer trains and holiday specials at the Ambur railway station.

In his memorandum, N. Mohammed Sayeed, president of the Ambur Tanners' Association, pointed out that withdrawal of the reservation facility for travel from and to Ambur has resulted in businesspersons being unable to travel to Ambur. Since the four-laning work being undertaken in the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway rendered it inconvenient for road travel, most customers were not ready to undergo the hardship. Under these circumstances, the absence of reservation facility for travel from and to the Ambur station caused loss to the leather industry due to the reduction in business visitors to Ambur, Vaniyambadi and Pernambut, he said.
