Nellore
By Our Staff Reporter
NELLORE, FEB. 10. The proceedings of the Irrigation Advisory Board (IAB) held at the Golden Jubilee Hall, Nellore, on Thursday, proved to be a tame affair, with most of the MLAs preferring to ignore it. However, they were present in full strength at the Zilla Parishad general body meeting, which was held later. At the IAB meeting, the S.E. (Irrigation), G. Tripureswara Rao, informed the members that the storage in Somasila reservoir on Wednesday was 11.477 tmcft, with net water availability for irrigation needs remaining at 10 tmcft.
Water to be released
After a short deliberation, the meeting resolved to supply water for about 3.17 lakh acres with the available 20.5 tmcft and another 7.51 tmcft with Government permission. Also a provision has been made for 4 tmcft of water to meet drinking water requirements of Nellore and Kavali. Only the MLAs of Gudur and Atmakur -- P. Prakasa Rao and K. Lakshmaiah Naidu -- were present and the MLA of Udayagiri, M. Chandrasekhara Reddy, came just after the conclusion of the meeting and he was informed about the resolutions. The resolutions had to be read twice by the S.E. as the first reading could not be properly heard by the members. The Minister for Primary Education, N. Rajyalakshmi, the district Collector, B. Rajsekhar and the ZP Chairman, P. Chenchal Babu, were present. The Minister reminded about the pressure from farmers for water to save their crops.
