Professional drama awards presented

THRISSUR, FEB. 10. The State Professional Drama Awards for 2003 were presented by the Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, at a function at the Sangeeta Nataka Akademi Hall here this evening.

Addressing the gathering, the Speaker said that mainstream Malayalam theatre was currently doing no socially useful work.

"On the other hand, professional plays of the past had fostered progressive ideals and encouraged social change," he said.

Recipients

Those who received the awards included Pramod Payyannur (best director), Pramod Chala (best actor), Sethulakshmi (best actress), Pradeep Kumar Kavunthara (best playwright), V. T. Murali and Daleema (best singers), Ramesh Kavil (best lyricist), Sujathan (best stage decor), A. Narayanan (best costumier), Bharat Gopi (writer of best book on theatre), P. R. Chandran (lifetime achievement award) and Meenambalam Santhosh (special jury award).

Among those present on the occasion were T. V. Chandramohan, MLA, the Mayor, K. Radhakrishnan, the chairman of jury, Vayala Vasudevan Pillai, the Collector, K. S. Premachandra Kurup, the chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, C. L. Jos, and the secretary, Sreemolanagaram Mohan.
