GULBARGA, FEB 10. The newly formed Gulbarga District Raitha Hitarakshana Samiti today began an indefinite dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here.

The protesters are demanding, among other things, the release of funds for market intervention to stabilise the falling price of red gram and withdrawal of all cases filed against farmers in connection with violence that broke out at the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard on February 8.

The former Minister Vaijnath Patil; M.R. Tanga, MLC; the former Minister K.B. Shanappa; the former legislators Veeraiah Swamy and Hanumanthrao Desai; the Vice-President of the State unit of the Janata Dal (United), Basavaraj Ingin; the president of the Krishik Samaj, Siddaramappa Dangapur; and the Vice-President of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (Puttanaiah), Basavaraj Tambaki, participated in the dharna on Thursday.

The protesters demanded the release of funds to the Red Gram Development Board from the revolving fund. They wanted the Government direct the board and the Karnataka State Cooperative Marketing Federation purchase red gram from the APMC Yards by participating in the auction.
