By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, FEB 10. DAV College, Jalandhar showed remarkable resilience to recover from a 0-2 deficit against Jamia Millia Islamia in the final of the ONGC-Nehru Champion Colleges hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Thursday. DAV won the racy contest 6-5 via the tie-breaker after the regulation period ended in a 2-2 deadlock. Bharat scored both the goals for Jamia, once in each half, but ironically, missed the last penalty push when his attempt struck the post. He first finished a move begun in the 15th minute by Sahil Bansal and later, in the 37th minute, created space to slam the ball in with a flourish. Jamia, which earned four penalty corners, appeared to have taken a firm grip on the game but DAV, with five penalty corners in the game, came back strongly. Six minutes into the second half, DAV scored from the second penalty corner when Harjit Singh beat the defence with a craftily directed shot. The Jamia lead lasted seven more minutes before Major Singh tapped in from a melee resulting from a penalty corner drive by Harjit Singh. With the scores tied, the pace of the game increased. Tempers rose and DAV was reduced to ten men in the last ten minutes when Rajvinder Singh and Sharanjit Singh were shown yellow cards. In the tie-breaker, DAV scored through Harjit Singh, Sharanjit Singh, Gurvinder Singh and Varinderjit Singh while Bikramjit Singh shot straight to goalkeeper Gaurav Singh. For Jamia, Deepak Kumar, Parveen and Sanjay Ajmani scored while Pramod Kumar Singh and Bharat missed.
