3,500 temples renovated

THANJAVUR, FEB.10 . The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department had so far renovated a total of 3,500 temples in the State, P. C. Ramasamy, HR and CE Minister, said here.

Declaring open a rest house for devotees constructed at a cost of Rs. 26 lakhs at Thirunageswaram Temple near Kumbakonam and laying the foundation stone for `annadhanam' building and Karunai Illam to be constructed at an outlay of Rs. 72 lakhs, the Minister said that 168 temples were being renovated at a cost of Rs. 42 lakhs in Mayiladuturai division.

A sum of Rs 6.75 lakhs had been allotted for renovating 27 village temples.

The government had given subsidy to the tune of Rs. 16.35 lakhs to take up renovation of eight temples. Construction of Karunai Illam at a cost of Rs. nine lakhs and a shopping complex at a cost of Rs. 21 lakhs were going on at Swamimalai temple.

Under donors renovation scheme, renovation of 27 temples were going on at a cost of Rs 1.76 crores.

The Minister said that a rest place for devotees was constructed at a cost of Rs. 30 lakhs at Oppiliappan Koil.

Under pension for archakas, 62 archakas in Kumbakonam area are getting Rs. 500 each. Under pension for village temple poojaris, 148 pujaris are getting Rs. 500 each a month. One kala puja is performed to 602 temples.

R.Vaidyalingam, Minister for Environment and Forests, P. A. Ramaiah, secretary, HR and CE Department, and C. Rajendran, Thiruvonam MLA, participated in the function.
