THANJAVUR, FEB.10 . Farmers should take up cultivation of alternative crops based on suggestions from Agriculture Department officials instead of depending on paddy cultivation alone, said the Collector, M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, at Narasingampettai in Kumbakonam taluk on Wednesday. Presiding over `manuneedhi' camp at the village, he said that an exhibition on alternate crops was arranged at the camp where exhibits on oilseeds cultivation were on display. He assured the villagers that steps would be taken to release adequate water for irrigation. Steps would also be taken to establish an additional Primary Health Centre in the village. Later, he distributed benefits worth Rs. four lakhs to 118 persons at the camp. S. Ramalingam, Chairman, Thiruvidaimaruthur Panchayat Union, P. Rajendran, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, S. K. Sampath Kumar, Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, Ganesan, Deputy Director (health) participated in the meeting.
