Promoted

CHENNAI FEB.10. The Inspectors General (IG) of Police, K. Ramanujam and Amit Verama, were promoted as Additional Directors General of Police (ADGP). Two Superintendents of Police (SP), A. Kandasamy and P. Sivanandi, were transferred.

According to an official release, Mr. Ramajujam, IG (Intelligence), has been promoted as ADGP (Intelligence), and Mr. Amit Varma, IG (Crime), as ADGP (CB-CID) in the existing vacancy.

Mr. Kandasamy, SP (Special Branch CID), has been transferred and posted as SP (`Q' Branch CID), replacing P. Sivanandi, who will be the new SP (Special Branch CID).

Rs. 1 lakh each for 25 families

CHENNAI FEB. 10. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, has sanctioned Rs. 1 lakh each to families of 25 police personnel, who died in harness or in road accidents. She also ordered a solatium of Rs. 50,000 each for 10 persons who died of electrocution or in wall collapse/land slip. The funds would be released from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund, according to an official release.

Moharram from today

CHENNAI FEB.10. The Chief Shia Khazi, Ghulam Mohammed Mehdi Khan, today said the month of Moharram of 1426 Hijri would start from tomorrow.

In a statement here, he said the seventh day of Moharram would be observed on February 17 and Youm-e-Ashura (10th day) on February 20, when a procession would be taken out from Jani Jahan Khan Road to the Thousandlights Mosque.

Dental Council member

CHENNAI FEB. 10. The Dental Council of India has appointed S.M. Balaji of Chennai its member.

Dr. Balaji is the first person from Tamil Nadu nominated to this post by the Union Ministry of Health, in Class A dentists group since the constitution of the council in 1948.

Residential schools for girls

CHENNAI FEB. 10. Thirty-seven residential schools for girls of elementary level will be established in 28 educationally backward panchayat unions during this year.

They will be set up at a cost of Rs. 8.59 crore under the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) scheme. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, conveyed this to the Union Human Resources Development Minister, Arjun Singh, according to an official release today.

The scheme is meant for those who could not receive formal education.

Last September, the Chief Minister requested the Union Minister to open the residential schools in the educationally backward panchayat unions. The Centre approved the proposal.

Panchayat president removed

VIRUDHUNAGAR FEB. 10 . R. Kasiammal, Sundararajapuram panchayat president, has been removed from the post by the Virudhunagar Collector, A. Mohamed Aslam, for causing financial loss to the local body.

According to an official release here today, the action, effective from January 26, has been taken under Section 205 of the Tamil Nadu Panchayats Act, 1994 on charges of dereliction, granting permission to create housing plants on poromboke land against government orders and issuing no objection certificates.

Suspended headmaster held

ERODE FEB. 10 . The Kunnathur police last evening arrested Arunachalam, headmaster under suspension of the Suriappampalayam panchayat elementary school on charges of misbehaving with girl students. He has been remanded to judicial custody for 15 days.

Some parents complained to the police and the Education Department that he was misbehaving with students in Standard IV and V.

Three days ago, the department, after an enquiry, placed Mr. Arunachalam under suspension.

Elected president

CHENNAI FEB. 10 . G. Balakrishnan has been elected president of the Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association. The other office-bearers are T.C. Dayalan (general secretary) and T.R. Gomathynayagam (treasurer).

Government's decision flayed

CHENNAI FEB.10. The All-India State Employees Coordination Committee (AISECC) has criticised the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government's decision to raise the foreign direct investment limit to 74 per cent in telecommunications.

The central secretariat, which met here recently, said the decision was not in national interest and went against the UPA's common minimum programme.

It sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister, listing the demands of over one crore State and Central employees such as revision of pay scales, enhancement of service conditions, raising the ceiling for income tax exemption to Rs.2 lakhs, continuance of the statutory pension scheme and raising the interest on the general provident fund at a par with employees provident fund.

Special train to Nagercoil

CHENNAI FEB.10. The Southern Railway will run special trains between Chennai Egmore and Nagercoil on February 13 and 14 to clear rush of passengers.

The Chennai-Nagercoil special will leave Egmore at 8.30 p.m. on February 13 and the Nagercoil-Chennai Special will leave Nagercoil at 3.30 p.m. on February 14, says a Southern Railway release.

Gang murders youth

TUTICORIN FEB. 10 . A 26-year-old youth was allegedly murdered by a six-member gang at Kovilpatti on Wednesday night.

The police said Karuppasamy owed Velusamy some money. Since the latter was insisting on repayment of loan, Karuppasamy, along with Murugan, Chinnasamy, Kannan, Muthukumar and Muthupandi, allegedly attacked Velusamy with a sickle fatally.

The police today arrested Karuppasamy, while the rest are at large.

Motorcycle stolen

TUTICORIN FEB. 10 . A motorcycle belonging to one Arumugam was stolen at Kovilpatti on Wednesday.

The police said the complainant had parked the vehicle in front of Hotel Muthu Vilas on the Kovilpatti-Ettayapuram road. On his return, he found his bike missing.

According to the complainant, Rs.50,000 in cash which was kept inside the side-box fitted in the bike was also missing.

The police are investigating.

House burgled

TUTICORIN FEB. 10 . The police are on the look-out for some unidentified persons who broke open a house at Thermal Nagar and decamped with valuables here on Tuesday evening.

According to the police, the burglars took away a digital camera, gold chain, ear-ring and a car key from the house of Jawahar (31), junior engineer, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.

The police have registered a case under Sections 454 and 380 of IPC.

CITU demo

Activists of the Centre for Indian Trade Unions attached to transport corporations staged demonstrations in Nagercoil, Ranithottam, Kanyakumari, Monday Market, Colachel, Padanthalumoodu and Thiruvattar, urging the Government to find an early solution to their multi-point charter of demands including pay hike, distribution of

spare-parts, operation of new buses etc.

The CITU district secretary, Paul Raj, led the agitation in Nagercoil.

Kumaran centenary

ERODE FEB.10. The centenary celebration of Thyagi Kumaran would be conducted on February 12 at the Municipal VOC Park, the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said here today. Inspecting the arrangements for the celebrations, he said that six Ministers would attend the function.

A procession of school students would be conducted from Collectorate to the Park. Cultural programmes and debates would also be conducted.

Already essay writing and elocution competitions for school and college students were conducted and the Ministers would distribute prizes to the winners. The Erode MLA, K.S. Thennarasu, Martyr Kumaran Centenary Celebration Committee representative, J. Sudhanandhen, the RDO, R. Gajalakshmi and the Municipal Commissioner, Jayaraman, accompanied the Collector.

Chlorine leakage

ERODE FEB. 10. A fireman was admitted to the Primary Health Centre at Athani in Bhavani taluk on Wednesday after he vomited and swooned while closing a leakage of chlorine gas from a cylinder. According to the police, the TWAD is maintaining a water treatment centre at Athani for the Anthiyur-Nagalure comprehensive water supply scheme.

To purify the water, the department uses chlorine cylinders. On Wednesday, the officials noticed a leakage in a used cylinder and informed the Fire and Rescue Service personnel. When the firemen were plugging the leakage, one of them, Bhoopathyraja, vomited and swooned.

SALEM FEB. 10. The Tamil Nadu Consumer Vigilance Council in association with the District Supply Office (DSO) of Salem Collectorate conducted a consumer awareness programme.

The District Supply Officer, M. Ramalingam, inaugurated the seminar. The Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO), V. Dakshinamurthy, released handbooks on consumer awareness.

14 huts gutted

ERODE FEB.10. Fourteen huts were gutted. According to police, at Kavindapady JJ Nagar, 75 thatched huts were put up by some labourers living there.

This evening a sudden fire broke out from a hut, which spread to neighbouring huts. Fire and Rescue Service personnel put off the fire . Police have registered a case.

SALEM FEB. 10. A Centre for Automation and Drafting and Central Store was opened on the CSI Polytechnic College campus here recently. The Coimbatore Diocese Bishop, Rev. Manickam Durai, inaugurated the facility. The principal, Samson Ravindran, welcomed the gathering.
