NIZAMABAD, FEB. 10. The Minister for Rural Development, D. Srinivas, has asked the authorities of the Andhra Pradesh Northern Power Distribution Company Limited not to insist on payment of electricity arrears due from the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe people and other weaker sections. "You may collect regular domestic power charges from them. However, you have to await a decision from the Government with regard to the collection of arrears'', he told the APNPDCL authorities at a review meeting, here on Thursday. He also asked them to stop harassing them by foisting cases for their default to pay the domestic electricity charges and withdraw the cases registered immediately. He strictly directed them not to disconnect their services.
Government directives
Mr. Srinivas said though the AP Transco was an autonomous organisation it must follow the Government directions in letter and spirit. He sought to remind them that autonomy did not mean that the Government had no control over them. The APNPDCL Chairman, Gopal Reddy, told the Minister that the authorities were not insisting on payment of arrears by the SC and ST people. He disclosed that the electricity revenue collections were poor in the district and every month there was 40 per cent shortage in the target. Complaining that the authorities were not responsive and harassing the weaker sections for not paying domestic bills, the Banswada MLA, Bajireddy Govardhan, deplored that he had to face a barrage of questions when he went to the people.
