By S. Ramu
NALGONDA, FEB.10. "Hydrogen, oxygen kaliste neere, Communistulu kaliste hore (Water is formed when Hydrogen mixes with oxygen and hurricane is formed when Communists join hands),'' the last stanza of one of the songs sung by "Vandemataram'' Srinivas met with a loud applause from thousands of CPI activists. The revolutionary singer's song and the thunderous response it could generate are suffice to sum up the outcome of the four-day State conference of the Communist Party of India (CPI) that ended here on Wednesday. Call it a merger or unification the CPI top brass dedicated much of their time to ponder over such a possibility since "they are being repeatedly betrayed by the two power centres, called Congress and Telugu Desam.'' In response to the CPI general secretary, A.B. Bardhan's remarks on the merger in his inaugural address, the CPI State secretary enthused the 500-odd delegates by saying, "I hope we celebrate the first State conference (of the united communist party) in the near future.''
Alliance with UPA
The CPI decision makers gave enough hints for the cadre that the camaraderie with the United Progressive Alliance Government is running into rough weather. Mr. Bardhan criticised the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, for "his decision to open bars instead of providing water '' for people. The party State secretary-elect, Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, who came down heavily on some of the policies of the State Government, appealed to people to strengthen the hands of Communists "to create a left democratic alternative'' in the State. The land issue, the main agenda of the Communists, also dominated the proceedings. The issue of Telangana figured in the three-day closed door deliberations. The party top brass appealed to the Government to increase the amount from Rs. 5,000 crores to Rs. 10,000 crores that the party had demanded for the overall development of the region in the Warangal declaration.
Telangana issue
Meanwhile, expressing some reservation on the party's stand on the Telangana issue, Telangana leader asked the leadership to spell out its stand on the controversial Pulichintala issue, much to the embarrassment of the State leaders. The election of the new secretary also reportedly created much heat on penultimate and final day of the conference "due to an alleged division among the leaders on regional basis.''
