KARIMNAGAR, FEB. 10. Following the reported recruitment of rural youth by various naxalite groups, the district police have embarked on an ambitious scheme -- `Operation Surrender' -- to counsel the youth. As part of the strategy, the district police have listed the names of persons in the naxalite-affected mandals, who have joined the dalams during the truce period. These lists have been displayed at every police station and village centres. Copies of the lists are being handed over to the local bodies representatives including sarpanches, MPTC and ZPTC members and the mandal-level political leaders. The police are also handing over copies of the enlisted naxalites to the village sarpanches asking them to display the list in the Gram Panchayat office. "We are asking the parents of the enrolled cadres of the respective villages to disclose the whereabouts of their children to avoid problems in future,'' a police officer said adding that the lists have been prepared with a view to bridging the communication gap between the police and the people. "If they have migrated to some other States in search of employment and have proof about the migration, their names would be removed from the list.
If they are still in the dalams, the parents were being told to counsel them to surrender.''
Recruitment alleged
A police officer said that taking advantage of the truce period, the naxalites groups have conducted mass recruitments of the rural youth when they visited the villages to organise meetings. Majority of the youth have joined the dalams to gain supremacy in their village.
Good response
Surprisingly, there was good response to this experiment in the Sircilla sub-division. A total of 15 newly recruited dalam members of various naxalite groups have surrendered before the police within one week following the counselling programme.
