CHENNAI, FEB. 10. A two-day capsule course on "examination of forged signatures and documents" designed to facilitate detection of white-collar crime with the focus on banking/financial institutions was inaugurated today by V.R. Lakshminarayanan, former Tamil Nadu Director General of Police. The course is organised by the Institute of Criminological Research Education and Services (ICRES). Mr. Lakshminarayanan exhorted the frontline banking staff of leading private and nationalised banks and property valuers to be more vigilant while handling loan-related documents and keep abreast of information technology-linked crimes. "It is time the banking staff were trained in the increasing economic offences with the use of advanced information technology especially when the days ahead are going to be dominated with plastic money and internet banking functions." S. Mohan, former Supreme Court judge and ICRES president, discussed the importance of the course at a time when the banks had liberalised the disbursal of loans and advances. ICRES honorary secretary, A. Sivamurthy, and treasurer, K.S. Govindaraj, said there had been a 1 per cent increase in economic offences. Mr. Sivamurthy said 59 officers from leading banks were attending the course.
