Mangalore
By Our Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE, FEB. 10. The Government has been insensitive to the needs of Dakshina Kannada as it is not releasing money for various projects in the district, the MLA, N. Yogish Bhat, has alleged. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Bhat said the "step-motherly" attitude of the Government towards development works in the district had become evident as various important works were being either shelved or were not being given enough funds by the Government. Mr. Bhat said though the Government had released Rs. 11 crores for the completion of the airport expansion programme, it was dillydallying as far as release of another Rs. 10 crores was concerned. This was slowing down land acquisition process for the second runway project. The Hassan-Mangalore rail line conversion work required Rs. 28 crores but the Government under an agreement made with Karnataka-Railway Infrastructure Development Establishment (K-RIDE) should have paid Rs. 28 crores in full towards the completion of the line, he said and pointed out that the IAAI had fulfilled its financial commitment. He said this project was important for the development of the hinterland of New Mangalore Port and further delay in the completion of the rail line would deprive Mangalore of opportunities to develop rapidly. Mr. Bhat said the delay in the construction of the four-lane concrete road between airport and the Software Technologies Park of India was because of the lack of initiative on part of the Government which had released only Rs. 4 crores in the past one year despite receiving the full sum of Rs. 17.5 crores from the Union Government in 2003. He urged the Government to immediately release Rs. 13.5 crores for the work. Mr. Bhat said he had also brought to the notice of the Government the lack of basic facilities in the industrial area and industrial estate in Baikampady and Yeyyadi. A sum of Rs. 4.5 crores was required to bring these two industrial areas on track again. The second vented dam across the Nethravati required Rs. 8 crores. He said he had spoken to the Urban Development Minister, S.R. Morey, about this and that the latter had agreed to make funds available for the project.
