Police resort to mild caning at tennis complex

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, FEB. 10. The police resorted to mild caning at the SAAP Tennis complex at LB Stadium on Thursday after several hundreds of people tried to gate crash into the venue to watch the ongoing WTA Hyderabad Open Tennis Tournament.

The match commenced around 3 p.m. today. An hour later, hundreds of people thronged the venue to have a glimpse of the tennis players. In the process, they started pushing people towards the fencing. A woman, along with her two children, was also caught in the mad rush. Meanwhile, security guards belonging to Agile Security agency, who were posted there, tried to control the public. The police, too, joined and resorted to mild caning. It is learnt that at least two persons suffered injuries.

"Our men were carrying sticks, but they did not cane anyone. They were only trying to scare away the unexpected crowd," said V.R.K. Rao, Managing Director of Agile Security agency.

Mr. Rao informed that though the seating capacity of the stadium was limited to 5,000, several hundreds of people were outside the venue trying to get in.

"We did not expect this much crowd and there were several women among them," Mr. Rao said.
