Hyderabad
By V.V. Subrahmanyam
HYDERABAD, FEB. 10. They don't see light in real life. But, the gesture of some big names in Asian hockey walking across to give a reassuring touch to the children from Devnar Blind School was by all means a memorable event for these youngsters at Addlife, which has Kodela Sivaprasada Rao as chairman. The Indian captain, Dilip Tirkey, known for his humility, stretched across to pat the youngsters on the shoulder. "I just told them not to lose heart. Believe in God. Face reality and there are plenty of things which they can achieve despite being visually handicapped," he remarked later. For Gangadhar it was a truly memorable occasion when he shared his experiences with Tirkey and the former Pakistan captain Ahmed Alam along with the Hyderabad Sultans coach Narindrapal Singh. "Wish you a nice time and all the best in future," was the crisp reply from this student. A remark, which had Alam struggling to control his emotions. "We need your blessings yaar," was his spontaneous reply.
Chorus of goodwill
The story was no different for others like Krishna -- a good singer -- and Madhu. In fact, they joined in a chorus wishing the leading lights of hockey all the very best. "Well, these are the things in life which lift the spirits of the under-privileged and handicapped in this world," says Dilip Tirkey. Not far behind, Ahmed Alam was stunned by the pretty good awareness amongst the youngsters about the game. "I was surprised by their knowledge they were recalling some of the big names of the sport like Pillay, Sohail Abbas and others," he revealed. In fact, Pakistani stalwarts Sohail Abbas and Waseem Ahmed too were expected to join the above and some film stars. But they had to skip it for personal reasons. Still, these children looking for a caring touch could not have expected for a better gesture!
