Rajajinagar grade separator to be ready by May

BANGALORE, FEB. 10. Citizens in the western parts of the city will have to endure chaotic traffic and one-ways till May because the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has set another deadline for the Rajajinagar grade separator.

On Thursday, BMP officials promised the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Works, M. Muniraju, that the facility will be ready by May. This is the third deadline that the BMP has set since work on the grade separator started in October 2003.

Mr. Muniraju, who inspected various project sites in the city along with presspersons, asked the officials to complete work at the earliest as the work site — Rajajinagar Entrance Road — is the only connecting route for residents of Vijayanagar, Rajajinagar and surrounding areas to the central business district.

The officials informed that the contractors, SJR Constructions Company and their consultants, had been directed to complete work by May. Work on the project was started in July 2003 and officials say the delay is because of problems in land acquisition.

Being constructed at a cost of Rs 15 crores, the project features a four-lane grade separator from MEI Polytechnic to Rajajinagar Link Road (Vatal Nagaraj Road). It will be similar to the Mekhri circle grade separator.

Storm water drain

Residents of Brindavan Garden, Sanjeevappa Garden, Muthyalayanagar and other low-lying areas in and around Mathikere may not have rain-related problems this year.

This is because work on remodelling of the main storm water drain flowing between Gokula Road and new BEL Road along the Hebbal valley is likely to be completed by April. Officials said that 60 per cent of the Rs. 4.5-crore project has been completed.

Residents of these areas were put to great hardship after rain caused havoc and flooded basements of residential complexes.

Mr. Muniraju also inspected work on the Ambedkar stadium at Dasarahalli.
