By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI, FEB. 10. The district administration has forwarded a proposal to the State Government for strengthening the 35-km stretch between Samayapuram Tollgate and Kallakam on the Tiruchi-Chidambaram highway. Strengthening of the three-km stretch between Kakkakudi and Keezhachur and the 1.8-km Poovalur bypass road will be carried out under the Central Government road maintenance project. Revealing this information during an inspection of various road works on Tuesday, the Collector, V. Pandian, said the proposal for the 35-km stretch would be implemented under the road development scheme. The State's approval for the project was expected shortly. He instructed officials to expedite the construction of the Rs.10.75-crore rail overbridge at Melavaladi and throw it open for public use before August. Reviewing the Rs.30-lakh minor road repair works in progress on the 38-km stretch along the Tiruchi-Chidambaram road, which was battered by the rains, and the 12-km stretch between Pinnavasal and Kattur, the Collector instructed officials to complete the works on a war-footing. He also inspected road works and construction of small bridges undertaken in some villages falling under the Manapparai Panchayat Union and reviewed the progress. The road works included laying of a new 1.9-km road from Pannankombu in the Pannapatti panchayat to Nadukulam at a cost of Rs. 17.2 lakhs, laying of another new 1.5-km stretch at Palapatti in the Samuthiram panchayat at a cost of Rs. 17.73 lakhs. He ensured that the roads were being constructed in accordance with the stipulated length, breadth and quality standards. Later, interacting with villagers at Palapatti, he enquired whether the commodities at the fair price shops were supplied to them without pilferage. Advising them to apply for renewal of ration cards, he also assessed whether the villagers were satisfied with the supply of drinking water, functioning of street lamps, and the medical services rendered through the Primary Health Centres. The Collector was accompanied by senior officials including the Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency, M. Manohara Singh, and the Executive Engineer of Rural Development department, S. Sekar.
