Guntur
By Our Staff Reporter
Yaramala Bharathi
GUNTUR, FEB. 10. Building a community centre in Sarada Colony is the unfulfilled dream of the 17th division corporator, Yaramala Bharathi. The Guntur Municipal Corporation had earmarked a 1,200-square yard land close to high-level reservoirs, but in course of time, unauthorised persons stalled the project and encroached the land. A fencing has been put up in the remaining land. "Evicting the encroachers is in the hands of the Guntur Municipal Corporation officials and finding an alternative site for them is not a difficult task," Ms. Bharathi fells. The issue was raised at council meetings several times but no concrete action has been initiated, she laments. A 1,000-square yard site identified for library in the 16th lane also has been encroached upon and it needs to be cleared before the project is taken up, she points out. The Guntur Member of Parliament, Rayapati Sambasiva Rao, has promised funds from the MPLADS for a community hall, as it will be useful for people in four adjacent divisions, Ms. Bharathi says. A Congress corporator, she was able to get works valued at about Rs.80 lakhs sanctioned during her five-year term, but is not satisfied with the quantum of grants given to the division under all heads. The Sarada Colony, which should have been an ideal ward, is slowly turning into a large slum.
