Thiruvananthapuram
By S. Anil Radhakrishnan
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 10 . Work on the Rs. 12-crore first phase of the second coaching terminal at Kochuveli, near the capital, has entered the final phase and the first train is expected to be flagged off by March-end. "The work on the platform, stabling and pit lines have been completed and only the finishing touches remain. The Railway Safety Commissioner has given the sanction. We hope to commence train services by March-end," a senior official of the construction wing told The Hindu
Non-interlocking
The non-interlocking of the yard being taken up as part of installation of new signals and synchronising them with the main line will begin from February 12. The work will be completed by February 23 and trial run of the trains conducted during this period, he said. The Railways have already announced that the Kerala Sampark Kranthi Express to Nizamuddin sanctioned in the last Railway budget would operate from Kochuveli.
Station building
The coaching terminal, billed as the satellite terminal to Central Station, will have a station building constructed in traditional Kerala style and a service building for the mechanical wing as part of the first phase. The main entrance to the terminal will be from the Veli-Venpalavattom Road. The trains would take a turn from near the Kollam side of the level-crossing gate at the English India Clays plant to reach the terminal. The ground floor will have a floor area of 3,500 sq.ft. "The ground floor of the three-storeyed building will be completed in the next few months," the official said.
Flooring
The pit line, which also can take care of rakes of 24 coaches, has come up near the goods shed. The flooring of the platform, which can also accommodate 24 coaches, has been completed and the work for providing the canopy will be completed in one month. Initially, the Railways will be able to handle three express trains at the terminal. The Railways have already deposited Rs. 45 lakhs to the Kerala Water Authority for laying a dedicated line from Pettah. The existing railway station will be retained even after the new terminal is commissioned, he said. Currently, three pairs of passenger trains stop at the station. In the second phase, the Railways propose to construct two platforms, two pit lines, foot overbridge and take up expansion of the building.
