KOCHI, FEB. 10. Residents of Mupathadam, near Aluva, today blockaded a house where 37 girls were staying. The girls had come from Madurai seeking employment at a spinning mill in Edayar. The people also assaulted the owner and managers of the spinning mill. The panchayat members who were part of the events that led to the blockade said there were many minor girls in the group who were brought here as cheap labour. The girls have been promised wages of Rs.75 a day, they said. However, the girls said they had come here with the consent of their parents and that none among them was a minor. They were displaced following the closure of a mill in Madurai, they told the people and the police. E.T. Mathew, Dy.SP, said he would be making inquiries with the Madurai police. The Assistant Labour Officer also visited the spot.
