NEW DELHI, FEB. 10. Though the general situation on the power front improved, local faults caused unscheduled and frequent power cuts throughout the day in the many parts of the Capital on Thursday. With the temperature rising, there has been some improvement in the overall availability of power. On Thursday, the peak demand stood at 2,810 MW, while on Wednesday it was 2,931 MW. But on the loadshedding front, the figure rose from 31 MW on Wednesday to 107 MW today. The increased loadshedding was primarily due to low frequency in the Northern Grid, affecting supply of power throughout the day. Significantly, Delhi-based Northern Region Load Dispatch Centre has been monitoring the situation round-the-clock to ensure that there was no overdrawal of power from the Northern Grid. Overdrawal can result in tripping of the entire Grid. However, another reason for the power crisis in the Capital is the shutting down of Delhi's three power generating units -- one 30 MW unit of Gas Turbine power plant and two units of 62.5 MW each of the Indraprastha power plant -- for almost a month now. Several areas experienced unscheduled power cuts throughout the day on Thursday. "There was no electricity in my area from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and from 12 noon till about 8 p.m. today,'' complained a resident of Saket in South Delhi. When contacted a distribution company official said it was due to local fault. Residents of other localities including Uttam Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Shakarpur, Patparganj, Karol Bagh and Tilak Nagar have also complained about power cuts.
