KAKINADA, FEB. 11. The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation's (FAO) representative in India, Daniel Gustafson, said adoption of modern scientific managerial practices for the Indian aqua industry were a must in the face of international competition and globalization. Inaugurating the regional workshop jointly organised by the FAO and Fisheries Department at the Institute of Fisheries Technology here on Thursday, he said that although the aqua industry was prosperous, it would prove disastrous if proper managerial practices were not adopted. He said the FAO would extend the necessary training and cooperation to the aqua industry for maintaining quality in production. The Commissioner of Fisheries, P.Krishnaiah, said that that the aqua laboratories were not following uniform methods in testing the seed as a result of which the test reports were causing apprehensions among farmers. In order to set right the situation, he said the regional workshop was being organised here till February 15 to train technicians on PCR technology, standardisation, Validation and inter calibration. The Joint Collector, M Dana Kishore, who was the chief guest, advised the aqua farmers and hatchery owners to gain from latest techniques at the workshop and adopt the same in achieving good quality shrimp production.
