JNU's gesture

NEW DELHI FEB. 11. An active participant in the efforts for rehabilitation of the tsunami victims, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) teaching community has made a contribution of Rs. 10 lakhs towards the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

If students played their part by visiting the disaster site along with a group of faculty members and participating in relief measures, the monetary contribution includes a day's salary of JNU faculty and staff members. A cheque for Rs. 10 lakhs was presented by the JNU Vice-Chancellor, G.K. Chadha, to Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, recently.

An emotional farewell

NEW DELHI FEB. 11 . The management, staff and students of Amity International School, Noida, felicitated the outgoing Class XII batch at an emotionally charged "Citation Ceremony" at its premises this past Thursday.

The function began with a "havan'' accompanied by the chanting of "shlokas'' to invoke the blessings of the Almighty. The students lit candles, a gesture symbolising the path of awareness and enlightenment.

Addressing the gathering, the school's Principal, Mohina Dar, recounted the times when the students entered the Amitian portals with pattering feet and today were ready to leave with confident strides.

Vaish community elects vice-president

NEW DELHI FEB. 11. The All India Vaish Federation -- an apex body of Vaish community in the country -- has appointed Dinesh Gupta as the National Vice-President for the second consecutive term.

According to All India Vaish Federation release, Mr. Gupta has been associated with several social and educational activities and is also the Treasurer of the Pradesh Congress Committee.

Udayan celebrates anniversary

NEW DELHI FEB. 11. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, said every child deserves sunshine, familial warmth and opportunities to reach the sky and not the hard life on the streets. She was speaking on the occasion of the 11th anniversary celebrations of Udayan Care at the India International Centre here this past Sunday.

Ms. Dikshit lauded the efforts of Udayan Care in bringing sunshine to disadvantaged children on the occasion.

In his address, social reformer Swami Agnivesh warned people to be wary of religious leaders and urged them to take inspiration from sincere organisations and work for social causes.

Play staged

NEW DELHI FEB. 11. The Indian People's Theatre Association, Jamia, organised a play titled "Boodhe Shajar Ki Roshni" at Ansari auditorium in the Capital this past week. Directed by Md. Shahid the play was dedicated to tsunami victims.

The play depicted the social circumstances prevailing in the sub-continent after Independence.

The Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Mushirul Hasan, was also present on the occasion.

Phones to be transferred

NEW DELHI FEB. 11. Nearly 900 telephones with level 2550, 2551, 2552, 2553, 2554, 2555, 2557, 2559, 2561 and 2562 working in Block F and Block FG-I, Bodella village and Charak Sadan areas of Vikaspuri will be transferred from the Janakpuri telephone exchange to the Bodella RSU exchange on February 14 at 3 p.m.

The new level of all these telephones will be 2853. In case of any difficulty, subscribers can contact on telephone numbers 28531500 and 25611130.
