New telephone directory by month-end

PONDICHERRY, FEB. 11. The BSNL General Manager, Pondicherry, S.M. Kalavathy, has said the new telephone directory, corrected up to December 2004, would be released by this month-end.

Ms. Kalavathy told The Hindu yesterday that the directory would also be available in CD at Rs. 50 each.

"This time we have reduced the number of entries on each page since many people complained that they were finding it difficult to read them. The CD, which will be in the alphabetical order unlike the printed version, has separate listings and will be updated up to January. We plan to bring out updated versions periodically."

Speaking after an open house session, organised by the BSNL, Ms. Kalavathy said the BSNL planned to launch broadband Internet connectivity in Pondicherry by the end of this month. "At present, we are offering Internet connectivity at 64 kbps under broadband that will be augmented four-fold. One can make phone calls and browse the Internet simultaneously using the same line.

The minimum speed we will be offering is 256 kbps but if subscribers want higher bandwidth, we can provide," she explained.

Till date, the BSNL received 450 registrations through the Internet as well as in person for broadband connections. In the first phase, the broadband would be available in eight places in Pondicherry including Natesan Nagar, Lawspet and Pondicherry main.

The remaining places would get it in a couple of months. She said another 5,000 fixed wireless telephone connections and WLL connections would be added to the already existing 5,000 lines.
