Sarpanch held on assault charge

CUDDAPAH: The sarpanch of Veeraballi in Badvel mandal, Venkateswara Reddy, of the Congress, was arrested on Friday on the charge of assaulting an Assistant Sub-Inspector, S. Ganganna, in December last.

Congress activist murdered

ANANTAPUR: Linga Reddy (40), a Congress activist, was hacked to death reportedly by six unidentified persons when he was working in his orchard near Sangala village of Bathalapalli mandal in the district on Friday. According to the police, extra-marital affair and dispute over a fair price shop in the village were stated to be the reasons behind the killing.

ZPTC member creates flutter

CUDDAPAH: The Chakrayapet ZPTC member, K. Radhakrishnaiah, protested against the alleged non-allotment of seat for him by squatting on the floor at the mandal parishad meeting on Friday.

Mr. Radhakrishnaiah picked up an argument over the issue with the MPDO, Andrew, and demanded an apology. The MPDO maintained that he followed the protocol. The mandal vice-president, Muralidhar Reddy, intervened and pacified the member by offering him a seat.

Lorry crew robbed

KURNOOL: Unidentified miscreants attacked a lorry crew with knives and sticks and robbed it of Rs. 10,200 near Panyam in the district on Thursday night. According to reports, the miscreants boarded the vehicle which was going to Kurnool with a load of empty barrels at Nandyal. They threatened the driver, Nageswarao, and his son. When they resisted, the miscreants attacked them and relieved them of cash.

Former Magistrate dismissed

CUDDAPAH: B. Kullayappa, former First Additional Judicial Magistrate of Proddatur, has been dismissed by the Government. Orders to this effect were received by the District Court on Friday. Mr. Kullayappa was suspended in July 2003 on the charge of corruption and a probe was ordered. The Principal District Judge, T. Lakshmana Rao, conducted an enquiry and forwarded a report to the High Court which recommended the dismissal to the Government.

Dalit servant found dead

ELURU: A Dalit youth, working as a `paleru' (servant) with a landlord, was found dead in the farm fields at Velamilli in Ungutur mandal of West Godavari district on Friday. According to the Chebrole SI, A. Sudhakar, Yesu (22) is suspected to have committed suicide by consuming poison. The reason for his suicide was yet to be known, he said.

EAMCET forms at eSeva centres

Hyderabad: Application forms for EAMCET 2005 are being made available at all eSeva centres in the twin cities and Ranga Reddy district. According to a press release, these forms are available at a cost of Rs.300 till March 3. Application forms for PG diploma programmes at University of Hyderabad's Centre for Distance Education have also been made available at eSeva centres. The last date for sale of these forms is February 28 and each form costs Rs. 250.

B.Ed counselling in March

HYDERABAD: Counselling for admissions into B.Ed course will begin in the first week of March and the Government has fixed February 21 as the last date for submission of fee structure by the colleges to the Fee Committee headed by Justice Bayyapu Reddy. The APSCHE Secretary, V. Jayarami Reddy, on Friday said if the colleges fail to submit their fee structure reports by that date, they would have to follow the fee decided by the committee.

Excise policy: hearing adjourned

HYDERABAD: The hearing on the writ petition filed in the High Court challenging the new excise policy has been adjourned to Monday. The writ petition has been filed by several retail wine merchants of Visakhapatnam district complaining that they will lose by virtue of the new policy and their right to renewal will be lost.

Demand for pay commission

Hyderabad: Central Government employees organised a dharna at Indira Park in Hyderabad on Friday demanding the sixth pay commission. Other demands were grant of interim relief, withdrawal of new pension scheme, end to downsizing and surrender of posts.

Leave encashment payment

Hyderabad: The APSRTC Transport Mazdoor Sangh has demanded payment of leave encashment salary by February 20. In a press release here on Friday, the sangh general secretary, M. Nageswara Rao, said the RTC had not paid the leave encashment salary since last year leaving about 90,000 workers with financial hardships.

Digvijay to launch APCC website

HYDERABAD: The AICC general secretary incharge of State affairs, Digvijay Singh, who will be here on a day's visit on Monday, will inaugurate the official website of APCC. The automation work of the Congress headquarters is complete. Apart from the information about the party structure, data regarding socio-economic profile of each district is also available.

Nominated chairpersons feted

HYDERABAD: Speakers at a felicitation function for chairpersons of Government corporations nominated recently from among minorities on Friday lauded the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, for his handling of the situation in the wake of a large number of applications received from Congressmen for the posts. The Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, said Dr. Reddy went by the criteria of social justice in distributing the posts. The

Major Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Laxmaiah, said the reservation policy decided by the Chief Minister for the minorities was an example of his commitment to the welfare of the particular section.

Nominated to CLP post

HYDERABAD: Gandi Babji, MLA from the Paravada constituency (Visakhapatnam district), has been nominated as executive member of the Congress Legislature Party by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. This was announced here on Friday by N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Government Chief Whip.

CPI(M) submits memorandum

HYDERABAD: A delegation of CPI (M) on Friday submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, containing the resolutions adopted at the 21st State conference of the party at Warangal from January 25 to 28. The party listed out 24 major problems faced by the State and sought steps by the Government to solve them. The eight-member delegation was led by State secretary, B.V. Raghavulu, and the Polit Bureau member, Koratala Satyanarayana. Prominent among the resolutions were a demand to constitute an autonomous body with extensive supervisory powers to complete land distribution programme of the Government within six months.

Three killed as lorry overturns

NALGONDA: Three persons were killed and four others sustained injuries when the lorry on which they were travelling overturned near a bridge at Gumpula Tirumalagiri in Chivvemla mandal on Friday. Amgothu Madar (25) and Amgothu Sitaram (22) of Mamilla Madava in Nootankal mandal and another unidentified person of Tanamcharla in Warangal district died on the spot, according to the Chivvemla police. Ittook three hours for the police to extricate bodies from the wreckage.

Arogyavaram records 14°C

Hyderabad: The minimum temperatures rose at a few places in Coastal Andhra and Telangana on Friday while they changed little in Rayalaseema. Dry weather prevailed in the State. Arogyavaram recorded the State's lowest night temperature for the day at 14 degree Celsius. Forecast for Saturday: dry weather likely to continue.

Sports tournament

KARIMNAGAR: The 31st All-India Electricity Sports Control Board basketball tournament for the year 2004-05 organised by the Punjab State Electricity Board will be held at Patiala in Punjab from February 21 to 23.

Twelve players from the APTransco have been selected for the tournament. They include G. Raj Kumar (captain), E.L.P. Raju, K.E Anil Kumar and M.A. Hakeem of Karimnagar; Md. Yousufuddin Qureshi and P. Current Rao of Nalgoda; M. Vedamani and Srinivas of Nellore; G. Nageshwara Rao and Yadagari of Hyderabad; E. Babu Rao of Nizamabad and Prasanna Rao of Vijayawada.

Md. Latif Ahmed of Nalgonda and K. Narender of Karimnagar would accompany the team as coach and manager respectively, according to a press release.

MSR's call to students

KARIMNAGAR: The Minister for Endowments, M. Satyanarayana Rao, participated in the annual day function of SRR Government Degree College on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister stressed the need for discipline among students. Expressing concern over poor results in Government institutions, he called upon the teaching staff to strive for improving the results.

Earlier, he inaugurated four newly constructed classrooms. The Collector, C. Parthasarathi, the college principal, B. Ramchander Rao, and others were present.
