THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 11. The Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, has urged the Central Government to withdraw its decision to import fish and fish products from Thailand. In a statement here today, Mr. Achuthanandan pointed out that duty-free import of 82 varieties of fish and fish products from Thailand would land some 15 lakh people in the fisheries sector in deep trouble. The import is being effected under provisions of the free trade agreement between India and Thailand. However, 95 per cent of the fish and fish products mentioned in the list published by the Seafood Export Authority of India are not those available in Thailand. It is clear that the fish and fish products sought to be imported under the agreement are those produced in the developed west, he said. Pointing out that majority of the fisherfolk in Kerala are living at the subsistence level, Mr. Achuthanandan said the decision to allow free import of fish and fish products would only help aggravate the already serious situation in the fisheries sector.
