THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 11. The Minister for Transport, N. Shaktan, has called for strengthening of the rate contract system followed by the Association of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU) and steps for better assessment of the needs of the road transport undertakings. Inaugurating the 210nd meeting of the Standing Committee (Supplies and Contracts) of the ASRTU at Kovalam today, Mr. Shaktan urged the ASRTU to explore ways to provide better services to the commuters. The chairman of the Standing Committee and managing director of TNSTC, Coimbatore, C. Renga Samy, presided over the function.
Social cost
In his address, the Director of the Centre for Indian Road Transport, Pune, A. S. Lakra, said the Government should reimburse the cost of social services so that the road transport undertakings can be vibrant and profitable. Delegates from 32 road transport undertakings from all over the country are attending the meeting hosted by the KSRTC. The Director, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, S. K. Mishra, the chairman and managing director of KSRTC, K. P. Somarajan, the secretary, Transport, Sheela Thomas, and the managing director of the Kerala Transport Development Finance Corporation, Rajashree Ajith, spoke.
