By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, FEB. 11. B. Jayakumar, former president of the employees union (of Hotel Palmgrove, Chennai) affiliated to the Anna Thozhilalar Sangam, today said that the union members were not in favour of increasing the number of employees from 180 to 230, as the hotel industry all over had suffered a setback. Talking to newspersons in the wake of the murder of the hotel owner, Maniyakkaraj Ballal, three days ago, Mr. Jayakumar said the present union leader, Mayandi, had initially agreed with the members about the staff strength. But later at a meeting with the owner he had insisted that a section of temporary workers be regularised or that he (Mayandi) be paid money. Both proposals were unacceptable to the owner. And this stand-off had led to Ballal's murder, Mr. Jayakumar claimed. However, the union members and office-bearers said the guests at the hotel need not panic. The staff would extend their fullest cooperation to the new managing director. Moreover, the employees would provide a satisfying service to the guests, they added.
