THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 11. The construction of seawalls along the Kerala coast will not be a permanent solution to natural calamities such as tsunami waves, said the noted international expert on tsunami prediction, T.S. Moorthy. Addressing a Meet the Press programme conducted by the Thiruananthapuram Press Club today, he mooted the idea of setting up an early warning centre to mitigate the impact of natural disasters. He said the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) could be equipped to manage such a facility. With its proximity to the Arabian sea, CESS would be the appropriate agency to handle such a mission, he added. Dr. Moorthy, who is Professor at the University of Manitoba, Canada, stressed the need for an integrated coastal zone management strategy for Kerala. He said the environmental threats and the problems faced by the tourism sector could be integrated into the programme. Dr. Moorthy said India could take the initiative to establish a seismograph network linking the 37 nations ringing the Indian Ocean. "By sharing the data generated by the network and improving communication systems, the countries could come up with an effective hazard warning mechanism," he said.
