KOCHI, FEB. 11. Protection of the flora and fauna around us is a constitutional duty, said the former Supreme Court judge, V.R. Krishna Iyer. Speaking at a meeting organised by the Mangalavanam Paristithi Samrakshana Samithy, he said: "This meeting here is to fight those who work against the Constitution." The places surrounding the Mangalavanam, which included the abandoned railway station of the old times, should be maintained as a heritage site as it was the place where Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda and Rabindranath Tagore arrived, he said. Speaking on the occasion, K.K. Krishnan, a green activist, said that the mangroves, which earlier occupied about 8.44 hectares, had dwindled to 2.5 acres. Environmentalist U.K. Gopalan said that the importance of mangroves was being increasingly realised by people. Environmentalist John Peruvamthanam said that a letter was submitted to the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court protesting against the proposal of a car park for the new High Court building near the buffer zone of Mangalavanam.
