Plan to develop mangroves

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, FEB. 11. The Government is planning to develop mangroves on the coastal region in the State, the Minister for Fisheries, Dominic Presentation, has said.

After inaugurating the ceremony to present the Down To Earth - Joseph C John Award 2004 for outstanding work on environmental management to S. Seetharaman, who leads the Association of Environmental Protection, he said that the Government would think beyond laying the foundation for various projects. The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), New Delhi, and the local chapter of the Friends of the Trees (FOT) organised the ceremony.

He said that children should be infused with love for environment at an early age as the importance of its protection had been realised widely.

At the function, V.R. Krishna Iyer, former Supreme Court judge, presented the cash award of Rs. 1 lakh and citation to Prof. Seetharaman.

He said that it was because of people like Prof. Seetharaman that people had come to recognise the importance to environment.

In his reply speech, Prof. Seetharaman said that he would be using the award amount for environmental protection activities.

K.V. Thomas, MLA, and the Kochi Mayor, C.M. Dinesh Mani, spoke on the occasion.
