Dabbawallas' present for Prince Charles

MUMBAI, FEB. 12. Mumbai's "dabbawallas" will send traditional Maharashtrian attire to their royal "friend" Prince Charles for his wedding to Camilla Parker-Bowles on April 8.

"Prince Charles visited us during his stay in Mumbai in 2003 and invited us to Italy for the organic food seminar. We, the members of the Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers' Association, have decided to gift our royal friend on his wedding," the president of the organisation, Raghunath Medhe, said today. He said the traditional Maharashtrian attire for the bride and groom would be couriered next week to Britain. "We have decided to purchase the gift through voluntary contributions from all members," Mr. Medhe said. The association has 5,000 members and more than 100 were present at the meeting yesterday when the decision was taken. The Prince of Wales had in November last year met the dabbawallas at Churchgate Station here, where he was presented with a jasmine and rose garland, a brown and red bordered shawl and a silver plaque. — UNI
