HASSAN, FEB. 12. The president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, B. Janardhana Poojary, condemned the killing of six policemen of the Karnataka State Reserve Police force on Thursday night in Tumkur district by naxals. Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, Mr. Poojary said that the Congress will not tolerate violence and defended the Government's decision to constitute two special units to counter the naxal movement in the State. Urging the Government to take more stringent action against the naxals in the State, he said: "holding talks with those who are armed with AK-47s is an impossible thing."
`Encounter not fake'
Rejecting allegations that it was a fake encounter, Mr. Poojary said that seven bullets had been fired at the police officer who encountered the naxals on February 6. The police were right to have taken action against the naxals who were terrorising the people in rural areas, he said. He alleged that the naxals are running parallel governments in various parts of the country by killing legislators and landlords and it is the responsibility of a democratic government to protect the people by taking action against those who take law into their hands. Mr. Poojary said that the Government should hold talks with naxals only after they end the use of violence. "There are democratic ways to protest against the policies of the Government," he said.
Criticised
Reacting to the reported allegations made by the former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader, H.D. Deve Gowda, against the Congress at the Janata Dal (Secular) workers' meet in Bangalore on Friday, Mr. Poojary said that Mr. Gowda has no right to criticise the Congress high command. He said that a few leaders are trying to destabilise the coalition Government in the State. He accused Mr. Gowda of creating confusion among Congress workers. Reacting to the call given by Mr. Gowda to Janata Dal (S) workers to prepare for mid-term polls, Mr. Poojari said that the Congress is not hesitant to go before the people. He appealed to Mr. Gowda to follow the rules of coalition politics.
