Tarundeep Rai hogs the limelight

KOCHI, FEB. 12. Ten years ago, Tarundeep Rai got hooked to archery when he saw a group of young men shooting blindfolded at his native Namchi, in South Sikkim.

"Blind archery, the traditional type, is very popular in Namchi," said the Athens Olympian.

On Saturday, with both his eyes wide open, the Army youngster bagged three of the four FITA men's gold medals at the 25th senior Nationals at the Maharaja's Stadium here.

The 21-year-old also broke his own National record for the FITA overall total. The fight for the three golds, however, was close with Jharkhand's young Rahul Banerjee putting up a sterling show in the 70 and 50-metre events.

Jharkhand's Reena Kumari, who was in good form at the Athens Olympics, continued her sterling show, winning the women's 70 and 60m, the last with a National record. However, Reena lost her 50m National mark to her State-mate Dola Banerjee, also an Olympian and a multiple National champion.
