NEW DELHI, FEB.12. A rare treatise on Ashtavakra Gita, the philosophy of "self-realisation", published by Vishnu Sahasranama Satsangam, Ramakrishnapuram, here to coincide with its 37th anniversary celebrations, was released today by Justice B.N. Srikrishna of the Supreme Court. Justice Srikrishna said the rich cultural heritage of India had been preserved for centuries by Adi Sanakra and others and was still alive thanks to the propagation of lofty ideals contained in rare works like the Ashtavakra Gita. He described the book as an excellent compilation of vedanta. He distributed the copies of the book to senior Supreme Court advocate K. Parasaran and others. Mr. Parasaran gave away prizes to winners of the Vishnu Sahasranama recitation competitions conducted for school children in Delhi and Chennai. He lauded the efforts of the Satsangam in propagating Vishnu Sahasranamam among the people, particularly children. M.S. Venkatachalam, who has rendered the English translation for the Sanskrit slokas, said the book dealt with self-realisation. It was said to have been narrated by a sage in his boyhood days to a disciple who was none other than the great philosopher-king Janaka. "It systematically deals with the mystical experiences of the Self. When properly realised, the Self proceeds to transcendence, then to peace and then on to Bliss itself. It is compared to Bhagavad Gita because of its philosophical worth." According to the Trustee, T. Subramanian, the Satsangam was formed in February 1968 by V. Ramanatha Iyer and a few others with the sole objective of bringing devotees together for group recitation of Vishnu Sahasranamam on Sundays. Over the past 37 years there has been an uninterrupted weekly recitation with multi-crore chanting of divine namas.
