Catalyst Trust to `revive' Chinandikuppam

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, FEB. 12. Catalyst Trust, a city-based NGO, along with the assured support of 3 lakh Euros from a German NGO, Terra Tech, is all set to rehabilitate tsunami-hit Chinandikuppam near Neelangarai.

According to S. Radhakrishnan of the trust, "Project Revive" will provide 28 fibreglass motorboats, each equipped with five varieties of nets, to be shared among 84 fishermen families. ``While 60 per cent of the cost is subsidised, we want the families to repay the rest of the money over a period of eight years, to two societies which will be formed to rebuild the infrastructure of the village."

So far, Terra Tech, has worked in Eritrea, East Africa, and Palestine, said Andreas Schonemann. Theyadded at the press conference held on Friday that this was their first relief operation in India. Another NGO — "Family Circle" — has come forward with a donation of seven fishing nets.

"Based on the extent of land given by the Government, we will also make arrangements to construct houses, a community hall and a cold storage facility to store fish," said Mr. Radhakrishnan. There were plans to build a hospital in the village to provide free treatment.

"The Catalyst Trust aims to build a model fishing village, which will be self-supporting," added the chairman of the trust, R. Desikan.

Also present at the press conference were managing trustee of the trust, S. Krishnaswamy, and German vice-consul, Uwe Koppel.
