State told to keep promise on use of Veeranam water

By Our Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE, FEB. 13. The district conference of the Communist Party of India that concluded here today passed a resolution asking the Tamil Nadu Government to keep to its promise on the use of the Veeranam water.

The conference noted that the Government had earlier stated that it would give priority to the irrigation needs of the Veeranam ayacut areas and tap only the excess water for fulfilling the drinking water requirements of Chennai. The ayacutdars would feel reassured only if the Government passed legislation on the use of water from the Veeranam tank.

In another resolution, the party urged the Government to close the deep bore wells sunk in Panruti and Vadalur blocks, which were an addition to the New Veeranam Project. It called for a Rs. 1,000-crore financial package to develop the Cuddalore district. The party sought the implementation of the interim reward of the Cauvery Tribunal and pronouncement of the final award without delay.
