Arulappa's services will be remembered, says YSR

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, FEB. 13. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, expressed deep shock and grief over the demise of the former Archbishop of Hyderabad, Samineni Arulappa, here on Sunday.

In a statement, the Chief Minister said his spiritual and welfare activities for the poor would be remembered forever. He said Father Arulappa, Chairman of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Andhra Pradesh, was the youngest person to be appointed Archbishop and the longest serving ever in the country, he said.

"He was a man of the masses and people not only of the Catholic community but those from all religions loved and respected him immensely," the president and general secretary of the Catholic Association of Hyderabad, Martin Michael, and James Sylvester, said in another statement. During his three-decade-long tenure, he had seen the growth of the Archdiocese of Hyderabad from a mere 10 parishes to 72 in the districts of Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medak and Nizamabad.

The Andhra Pradesh Council of Churches said the churches in the State and the country had lost a great spiritual leader. "Fr. Arulappa was known for his uprightness and never minced words in distinguishing religion from culture," its secretary, Jetti A. Oliver, said.

Advani's tribute

The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, L.K. Advani, today condoled the death of Archbishop Arulappa. In a message, the former Deputy Prime Minister said he "admired" the Bishop for his "patriotism" and "bold espousal of cultural nationalism."
