MANAMA, FEB. 14. Former Lebanese Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri, has been assassinated in a car bombing in central Beirut. The powerful blast, also killed around nine people, drove a huge crater in the ground and set about 20 cars ablaze. The incident took place near St. Georges Hotel, close to the city's harbour. Mr. Hariri's motorcade was attacked when he was on his way back from Parliament, near the waterfront in west Beirut-a busy area, which has several hotels and banks. It is suspected that the casualties include members of Mr. Hariri's convoy. The Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, condemned this morning's bomb attack as a "terrible criminal act." Mr. Hariri had been a leading politician since the end of the Lebanese civil war in 1990, and was Prime Minister for most of years after that. In October 2004, differences with Lebanon's pro-Syria President Emile Lahoud caused him to resign. Lebanon has been calm for most of this time. Television pictures of the incident showed a bystander helping a burning man get out of his gutted car window, while several young women were seen with blood running down their faces.
