By Our Staff Reporter
ANANTAPUR,
FEB. 14.
The Guntakal railway police have solved a major case of theft of 14 kg of gold in just four days. They have recovered the entire quantity of the precious metal worth Rs. 81 lakhs and have arrested the alleged thief.
According to the railway CI, Bhaskar Naidu, Ashok Jain of Laxmi Jewellers in Chennai had sent one of his employees, Mahendra Singh, to Mumbai to get 14 kg of gold from their wholesaler. Mahendra Singh picked up the gold and set out for Chennai in a train. When the train halted at Guntakal in the late hours of February 10, he got down for having a cup of tea. When he returned to his seat the suitcase in which he had kept the gold was gone.
Mr. Jain told the railway police that one Sandeep, who had left the job with him a couple of months ago, had knowledge of the regular process of getting gold from Mumbai. The railway police suspect that an accomplice of Sandeep could have alighted the bus in between after getting information that the police were chasing it.
