Nod for population panel

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 14. The Delhi Cabinet today cleared a proposal for setting up the Delhi State Population Commission with the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, as its head for implementation of the National Population Policy-2000 in the Capital.

A release issued by the Delhi Government said the State Population Commission comprising 20 members would be performing an advisory role to assist and guide the Government in implementation of NPP-2000 and formulation of State Population Policy for achieving population stabilisation in Delhi.

The terms of reference of the Population Commission include providing overall guidance to Government efforts for achieving both population stabilisation and sustainable achievement in human development; and promoting synergy between demographic, educational, environmental and developmental programmes including nutrition, women and child development, safe drinking water, sanitation, waste disposal, roads, communication, transportation, housing and forestry development so as to hasten population stabilisation.

The State panel would also facilitate development of a vigorous people's movement in support of the population stabilisation efforts of the Government, and as this cannot be done without addressing the problem of migration, it shall look into this problem and suggest ways and means to overcome this hurdle. Finally, the Commission will also formulate the Delhi State Population Policy.
