This Day That Age
The second batch of 34 constituencies went to the polls on February 15 to elect 37 members, including three representatives of the Scheduled Castes, to the Andhra Legislative Assembly. These constituencies cover the 11 districts of Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Nellore, Chittoor, Cuddapah, Anantapur and Kurnool. The first leg of the staggered polling in the general elections was held on February 11 in 35 constituencies spread over eleven districts and the third batch of constituencies will go to the polls on February 18. Brisk voting was reported till noon from most the constituencies. In urban and semi-urban constituencies, polling was heavy and, as a whole, about 40 per cent of the over 22 lakh voters are estimated to have exercised their franchise. The Governor, Mr. C.M. Trivedi, inspected 14 polling stations in the Dhone constituency of Kurnool district. A rustic villager had his ambition fulfilled when he shook hands with the Governor. As he was chatting with a group of youngsters near a polling station in Dhone, a middle-aged peasant meekly came up to the Governor, extending his right hand. The Governor readily complied with his request.
