GWALIOR, FEB. 15. Medium-pacer J.P. Yadav took five wickets as Central Zone shot out East Zone for 194 runs on the opening day of the four-day Duleep Trophy match at the Roop Singh Stadium here on Tuesday. At close, Central Zone was 74 for four, thanks to Shib Shankar Paul who claimed three wickets for 11. Abbas Ali (seven) and Naman Ojha, yet to open account, were at the crease when bad light ended the day's play. Ranadeb Bose (one for 44) took the other wicket. East Zone elected to bat on a grassy wicket. The decision, however, seemed justified when Shiv Sunder Das (34) and Arindam Das (31) added 66 runs for the first wicket, at a sedate pace though. But three quick wickets by Yadav pulled the rug from under East's feat. With Sanjay Bangar chipping in with two for 46, the visitors plunged from 66 for no loss to 87 for five. Yadav, Harvinder Singh and Rudra Pratap Singh extracted bounce from the pitch and it became clear that the going would be tough for East Zone. Though Mahendra Singh Dhoni began with a bang, he could not find his rhythm and was seen walking back to pavilion 10 balls later, giving a catch to wicketkeeper Naman Ojha off Yadav. Prafulla Jaychandra and skipper Lakshmi Ratan Shukla were also out in similar fashion. However, Sanyal (62 not out) shared two crucial partnerships with R. Satish (12) and Sanjay Satpathy (21) to give some respectability to the total. Sanyal struck six fours and a six during his 65-ball knock that spanned 99 minutes. He added 37 runs for the sixth-wicket with Satish but he had better support from Satpathy with whom he shared a 55-run association for the seventh wicket in 56 balls.
