Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, FEB. 15. The former Home Minister and senior Congress leader, P. Kannan, today urged the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, to quit office saying the party image had been set back because of scams and malpractices in various Government departments. Addressing newsmen here, Mr. Kannan, a member of the All-India Congress Committee, said a section of top-level officials of the Public Works, Revenue and Police departments had been transferred either at one go or in quick succession. It only confirmed that as soon as officials were utilised for "corrupt practices" they were being shifted. . Mr. Kannan objected to a Government-sponsored corporation itself running a liquor business here. Availability of illicit arrack had become a cause for concern. Such incidents tarnished the image of the Congress Government here. Asked if his plea for the resignation of the Chief Minister would not mean the fall of the Congress Government here, Mr. Kannan said: ``Let it happen and let a new Chief Minister take charge. Let Mr. Rangasamy step down and make way for a clean and able person to hold the reins.''
Law and order
The law and order situation was poor in Pondicherry, he said. The Government had lost several crores, thanks to ``clandestine sand quarrying work in some of the peripheral villages.' Mr. Kannan said he had brought it to the notice of the high command the ``decline in administrative efficiency."
