Welcome verdict

Sir, — This refers to the Supreme Court order declaring 112 private universities, established under the Chhattisgarh Private Sector Universities Act 2002, illegal. It is surprising that a State having only 16 districts and having been in existence for only four years had so many universities. The names of some of them — Lovely, Dolphin and Crystal — sound like those of beauty parlours. We hope the ruling will regulate the institutions of higher education in India.

K.S. Mankar,
Nagpur

Sir, — The Court has dealt a body blow to mushrooming universities. The immediate task ahead is to ensure that students are refunded their fees. The motive in establishing the universities should be investigated. Surely, education could not have been the priority in establishing 112 universities in a span of four years?

G.K. Francis,
Chennai
