Sir, — This refers to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's lament that there is no single agency to check corruption in public life (Feb. 13). Impossible, it is said, is often untried. But trying to eradicate corruption is indeed trying to do the impossible. Greasing palms to get things done has unfortunately become acceptable.

Sir, — Ethics and politics have distanced themselves from each other as never before. The country seems to be fast slipping into the hands of immature politicians and fundamentalists. It is time the educated and social activists entered politics and rescued the nation from falling into the hands of anti-social elements.

Sir, — Economists have predicted that India will become an economic superpower by 2015. But the other aspect of the polity is worrying. Criminalisation of politics, widespread corruption, internal and external threats to security, and an irresponsible Opposition are the order of the day. They only seem poised to grow in the coming years.
