Sex scandal in Ahmedabad

By Our Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD, FEB. 15. The Ahmedabad police have claimed to have busted a sex scandal in some temples of the Swaminarayan Vadtal sect.

The Additional Police Commissioner (Crime Branch), D.G. Vanjhara, said that a "sadhu" of the sect in the Swaminarayan temple in Junagadh and three alleged touts, described as followers of the sect, were arrested in this connection.

Some compact discs (CDs), reportedly containing sexual acts carried out by Swaminarayan sadhus in Junagadh, Ahmedabad, Surat and Broach, were also seized by the police. Mr. Vanjhara said four women shown in the CDs had been identified.

They had been allegedly lured by the sadhus with promises of blessing them with sons or to attain "heaven" and were forced to participate in the sexual acts.

Mr. Vanjhara said a tout claimed that one of the groups involved in a power struggle at the temple had engaged him to lure sadhus of the rival group into sexual escapades and "expose them."

Police began investigations after receiving anonymous letters about CDs of the sadhus being circulated in the city.
