KOCHI, FEB. 15. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has said the Union Government will invest Rs. 20,000 crores in various development projects in the State. This is the biggest investment ever received by the State, he said. Mr. Chandy was briefing presspersons here today after a meeting of the Council of Ministers in the presence of the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. The Prime Minister had promised to clear the Sabarimala development package and monitor the progress of the Pamba Action Plan. He had promised to favourably consider the State's demand for a package in the plantation and the traditional industrial sectors, Mr. Chandy said. The projects for investment include the Vallarpadam container terminal, expansion of the National Thermal Power Corporation's plant at Kayamkulam and LNG and other petrochemical ventures, Mr. Chandy said. The Prime Minister was keen to visit the State once a year and keep track of the development projects. Dr. Singh would favourably consider the State's demand for institutions of learning such as an Indian Institute of Technology and a national medical institute. The State had sought a sum of Rs. 2,371 crores as the third instalment of tsunami aid. An amount of Rs. 100 crores was received as first instalment.
