AIYF leader killed in attack on hostel

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, FEB. 15. In an attack by a 20-member gang of outsiders on the men's hostel of TKM College of Engineering here late on Monday night, one of the gang members who sustained serious injuries died soon afterwards.

The police have identified the deceased as AIYF leader M. Shaiju, 20. The police have said that Shaiju was not a student of the college.

The college has been closed indefinitely following the incident. The reason for the attack on the hostel is yet to be ascertained. According to a version, it was a dispute over a motorcycle that led to the attack; while another version has it that vested political interests were responsible for the incident.

The students of the hostel told the police that the gang barged in with swords and attacked the inmates. Eight inmates of the hostel were injured in the incident. One of the fingers of Jijoy, university union councillor of the college, was chopped off in the attack. He was rushed to a private hospital in Ernakulam. The other seven inmates have been admitted to a private hospital here.

The details of how Shaiju sustained injuries are not known. According to a statement here today by the AIYF district unit, Shaiju and an AIYF activist Niyaz were returning from a temple festival. They were taken by force into the hostel by some of the inmates and assaulted. This had led to the death of Shaiju, the statement said.
