NEDUMBASSERY, FEB. 15. The Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson, V.K. Malhotra, today said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) with the support of independents was set to secure a majority in the Bihar Assembly elections, while it was a neck-and-neck fight in Jharkhand. Talking to presspersons at the Cochin International Airport, Mr. Malhotra said that when elections to three State Assemblies were declared, the NDA was in a no-win situation. However, things got brighter afterwards because of the solidarity of its alliance and the infighting of its opponents. He said that fissures had appeared in Lalu Prasad's vote base. Muslims, comprising 17 per cent of Bihar's population, were drifting away from him. Mr. Prasad's monopoly over Yadav votes would suffer a dent due to the presence of Mulayam Singh's Samajwadi Party, which entered the Bihar politics in a big way in its urge to get recognised as a national party. Meanwhile, the upper castes and at least a section of the backward castes were standing firm with the NDA, Mr. Malhotra claimed.
